Orchestra

An orchestra is an instrumental ensemble of about 100 players with string, brass, woodwind sections, and usually percussion. Smaller groups are in the "Ensemble" category.

Choir

Choral music tends to be my favorite type of music to record and listen to. There are many varying techniques depending on the room acoustics, group talent, and musical choices....I enjoy the challenge.

Chamber

Classical music group - Quartets, Quintets, duets, solos.... you name it. Anything regarded as classical music smaller than an orchestra.

Religous

Live or recording support for religious functions, services or music programs.

Jazz

Big band and combos. I wish I could do more.

The Banff Centre

Located in Alberta, Canada deep in the Canadian Rockies, the Centre hosts music, art, and many other programs in addition to audio.

Big Projects

Projects that need their own page or section, because of their involvement, ingenuity or uniqueness....or because they took lots and lots of time.

Surround

Recordings I have taken from existing multitracks and re-mixed in Protools or Pyramix or were recorded with a surround rig.

Lansing Symphony

In 2005 and 2006 I was in charge of recording the concert series. I would arrive to the hall that morning and hang the microphones as close to the same setup as possible from concert to concert. I also took the project through editing and mastering.

M.S.U. Symphony

I was the engineer for this top-level college orchestra for three years (about 19 concerts). For each concert I try different techniques utilizing most of the equipment and microphones. Recordings ranged from 2-3 microphones to a full 20-track recording.

World Youth Symphony

This symphony is the the most prestigious ensemble at the world-renowned Interlochen Arts Camp. Each Sunday the group performed a concert that was simultaneously broadcast live over Interlochen Public Radio. Myself and two others engineered these concerts, managing the orchestra mix, host mics and program content.

M.S.U. Children's Choir

Directed by Mary Alice Stollak, the choir is the recipient of a few Grammy awards for a work they did with some University of Michigan folk. My work with them has been in other recording sessions for various projects and live concerts. Some sessions have been used as samples to sell Mrs. Stollak line in the Santa Barbara Music Publishing company.

Haslett High School

Haslett High School (Michigan) has a nationally recognized choir program, after invites to National and regional ACDA conferences, and many state awards. The choir program teaches about 1/3 of the high school's students every year.

M.S.U. Chorale

The 50-member Chorale performs a concert once a semester. I love the genre of music, though tend to be the simplest. In general I use a spaced pair in the hall the group normally performs at. In April of 2006 the Chorale performed the Durufle's Requiem which I consider one of my favorite recordings.

Broadcast Projects

Started in the fall of 2005, WKAR Public Radio (90.5 FM) airs recordings of faculty and School of Music performances. Concerts are chosen ahead of time by WKAR and then I engineer the concert from setup to mastering. For faculty and guest artist concerts I select and place microphones on stage and use the higher-end gear.

Smaller Sessions

One of my most successful practices is recording sessions for pre-screening and auditions discs. The sessions are done on-site, usually at Okemos Community Church on the east side of Lansing, Michigan, however many have been done at Haslett High School and many of the venues at the School of Music at Michigan State University.

Recordings have gotten singers into most major music schools in the nation from Julliard to Northwestern. They also win competitions, most notably the Verdi Opera Competition in Detroit, Michigan. There has never been a problem with one of my recordings getting a singer into a school, and the feedback I get from schools on the discs is wonderful.

Ensembles & Recitals

Concert recordings intended for archive, broadcast or other use. Projects range from simple live-to-2 track with a stereo pair, to larger multitrack projects with some being taken through mastering and duplication.

Okemos Community Church

I provided full audio support along with many other technical projects. This included annual albums from multitracked Cantatas and large works, DVD's of recitals and holiday church functions, upgraded and maintained main sound system, researched and wrote technology proposals for equipment, and acted as webmaster for the church's website.
