Orchestra
An orchestra is an instrumental ensemble of about 100 players with string, brass, woodwind sections, and usually percussion. Smaller groups are in the "Ensemble" category.
M.S.U. Symphony
I was the engineer for this top-level college orchestra for three years (about 19 concerts). For each concert I try different techniques utilizing most of the equipment and microphones. Recordings ranged from 2-3 microphones to a full 20-track recording.

Guest Artist: Melanie Helton
Guest Composer: Ricky Ian Gordon.
In this concert, soprano and MSU faculty, Melanie Helton preforms this world premier piece written for the MSU Sesquicentennial with MSU Symphony Orchestra.
Recording:
Standard Neumann SM69 with Schoeps outriggers
Solo: Neumann U87
This was a tricky concert. For any soloist, especially voice, being at the edge of the stage sucks all the sound out. Most soloists then start to migrate backwards. For School of Music concerts, the first row can be blocked off (as oppose to Lansing Symphony). After trying the Coles 4038 Ribbon during rehearsal along with the U87, I chose the U87 because it could pick her up better, rather than the figure-8 ribbon. Distance and logistics of this situation also played a fact
