An amazing last concert at MSU for me. Not that I’m all about the Christmas songs, but the production behind the scenes was great experience. I walked out of the concert feeling like a professional, and not so much a hired student (and technically I’m a graduate now).
In addition to the MSU Children’s Choir performing with the LSO, local TV station WLNS ch. 6 recorded the concert for delayed broadcast a week later. They used 6 cameras cabled throughout Wharton to a truck just outside in the loading dock. I provided a stereo mix through the usual Protools/002 rig including returns from wireless the anchors wore, and highlights on the Children. FOH also took splits of the highlights. With my boss being out of town, this put me in the middle of all the audio support. I was on my feet non-stop during the 2 1/2 hour rehearsal the day prior bouncing between both groups troubleshooting, mixing and sometimes entertaining really bad jokes.

Because of video, I had to ‘hide’ all my mics, except for the flown three (especially the bright sliver SM69). I choose the Schoeps for chorus because I needed a small, physically colored and bright sounding microphone that would work well low to the ground. Side addressed made the most sense, and the Schoeps were the only kind that were not gaudy large-diaphram.
As for the wireless problem - Very new Shure UHF-R. No problems in the past, and that night was just a bad night.
One note about the broadcast itself. Although the camera work was nice, overall I was disappointed to the video quality and especially audio quality of the final product. The mix I heard over regular cable was mono, and frequency limited. To mix this again, I would have cranked the high end, and checked mono compatibility more carefully.
