The program:
Mozart - Concerto in C major for Oboe and Orchestra
Rusalka’s aria, “Song to the Moon” from Rusalka, by Dvorák
Sibelius - Concerto in D Minor for Violin and Orchestra
Joseph Shwantner - Concerto for Percussion and Orchestra.

This concert was a blast, and a highlight of my three years at State.  Being a percussionist, I completely nerded-out on this concert and had fun with Gifford (the percussionist).  Though I did not have advanced warning of the last percussion concerto piece, I did managed to fill the 8-tracks of the Digi 002.  I keep talking about the percussion portion, but the first half of concertos were also just as impressive.  The spaced M150’s provided an amazingly warm, close almost studio/film-score sound, which was good for the percussion concerto since it allowed the strings to be heard at all… 4 other highlites were placed around the percussion section.  The marimba had to be downmixed from a board on-stage because of the live sound support the musicians wanted on-stage.  Being a percussionist, this still remains one of the coolest concerts I’ve ever recorded.

More on this piece and a feature I provided video clips for at Vic Furth.com as well as the entire concert on Vic Firth’s podcast page here.
